Why am I passionate about this?

I fell in love with opera history as an undergraduate exchange student in Vienna and went on to pursue my passion in graduate school. Rather than writing about opera composers and their music, I chose the unusual path of studying famous singers from the nineteenth century, especially the prima donnas who exerted extraordinary authority over composers, theater directors, and spectators. In my books and articles, I focus on the power of divas to thrill audiences and to shape the musical culture of which they are an integral part. What is my book about?

I wrote Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville as an homage to the singers who have performed the roles of Almaviva, Bartolo, Rosina, Basilio, and Berta since the opera’s raucous premiere on February 20, 1816 up to the present day. 

While Rossini and his music play prominent roles in this book, the true stars are the prima donnas and leading men who altered Rossini’s score in performance. Some of these actors cut musical numbers, while others added new arias and layered Rossini’s music with ornaments so thick that the original melody became virtually unrecognizable. This book tells the stories of these singerly alterations, illustrating how performers’ creativity, combined with operatic malleability, has helped this opera remain one of the most popular works of all time.
